District 1 Commissioner Katie Delaney announced her resignation Tuesday night, citing a “life-changing opportunity” that will take her and her family out of state.
Delaney made the formal announcement during the Brevard County Commission meeting, noting that her resignation will be effective May 2. The first-term commissioner, who was sworn into office Nov. 19, 2024, said the decision followed deep consideration and prayer.
“Serving you has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Delaney said in a statement to constituents. “I am profoundly grateful to the people of District 1 for the trust you placed in me, for your voices, and for allowing me to stand in the gap and fight for what matters most.”
During her tenure, Delaney prioritized direct community engagement, often visiting residents at their homes to discuss local infrastructure and concerns. She highlighted her work reviewing drainage ditches in West Cocoa and addressing dirt road issues on Satellite Boulevard as defining moments of her term.
Delaney emphasized that while she is stepping down, the “mission” of her office—which she described as strengthening transparency and accountability—should continue under new leadership.
“What we started together was never about one person or one seat,” Delaney said. “It was about raising the standard… and ensuring that the people — not bureaucracy or special interests — remain at the center of every decision.”

The commissioner also offered high praise for her staff, specifically naming aides Kristin Lortie, Ruth Amato, and Megan for their dedication to the district.
Delaney’s departure will trigger a transition for the North Brevard-based district. While her next steps involve a move out of Florida, she pledged to remain an advocate for informed citizenship and strong community leadership.
“You have seen what is possible when your voice is heard and your concerns are taken seriously,” Delaney told residents. “Continue to stay engaged, expect transparency, and be part of the process that shapes your community.”
