UPDATE 11:30 p.m.

First responders across Brevard County are mourning after a devastating traffic collision on Interstate 95 claimed the life of a veteran Brevard County Sheriff’s deputy and another driver.

The fallen deputy has been identified as 55-year-old Agent Kevin Morris, a dedicated homicide agent, polygraph examiner, and field training officer who was killed in the line of duty while responding to an emergency call.

According to law enforcement officials, Agent Morris was responding late Saturday evening to a separate officer-involved shooting that had occurred earlier in the night in Mims. At approximately 11:01 p.m., emergency dispatch began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a wrong-way vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 near the rest area north of State Road 46.

Authorities reported that another sheriff’s agent driving just ahead of Morris spotted the wrong-way vehicle and immediately radioed dispatch. Though that agent narrowly avoided collision, the wrong-way driver traveled approximately 2 to 2.5 miles south in the northbound inside lane before striking Agent Morris’s vehicle head-on south of SR 46.

Upon impact, both vehicles became fully engulfed in flames. Emergency personnel from Brevard County Fire Rescue, the Titusville Fire Department, and the Titusville Police Department rushed to the scene. Despite immediate rescue efforts, both Agent Morris and the 26-year-old female driver of the second vehicle died from their injuries.

Titusville Police Department and Titusville Fire Department personnel spent the overnight hours assisting partners at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office as first responders managed multiple critical incidents across the area.

During an emotional press briefing, Sheriff Wayne Ivey remembered Agent Morris as an exemplary officer and a man of deep faith whose warmth and infectious personality lit up every room.

Morris previously served with the Palm Bay Police Department before leaving in 2011. In February 2021, he was inspired to return to active law enforcement after his daughter joined the police academy, re-energizing his passion for community protection. During his tenure with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, he served as a deputy, field training officer, homicide agent, and polygraph examiner.

Agent Morris is survived by his wife and his daughter, who carries on his family tradition of service as a detective with the Melbourne Police Department.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has taken the lead as the primary investigative agency. To ensure complete objectivity and relieve local troopers who knew Morris personally, FHP assigned its statewide Investigations and Reconstruction Team to conduct the traffic homicide investigation.

FHP Lieutenant Taylor explained that investigators are analyzing physical road evidence, vehicle dynamics, witness accounts, and awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports from the medical examiner to determine why the 26-year-old driver made a U-turn in the northbound lanes.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) peer support teams have been deployed across agencies to support deputies, firefighters, and 911 dispatchers. Law enforcement agencies across Brevard County have stepped up to cover routine calls so Sheriff’s Office personnel can grieve their fallen brother.
