In a monumental leap towards making space travel accessible to all, Space Perspective has successfully completed a full flight profile of its uncrewed Spaceship Neptune-Excelsior.

This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in the company’s mission to usher in a new era of space tourism.

Launched from Marine Spaceport Voyager off the coast of St. Petersburg, Florida on September 15th, the six-hour journey saw Spaceship Neptune ascend to an altitude of approximately 100,000 feet, offering a breathtaking view of Earth from the edge of space.

The spacecraft then executed a controlled descent and splashdown, showcasing its full flight capabilities and validating key technological advancements.

Pioneering Technology and Innovation
“Completing Development Flight 2 is a defining moment for Space Perspective,” said Taber MacCallum, Founder and CTO. The flight not only demonstrated the spacecraft’s pioneering technology but also highlighted several crucial advancements:

  • Launch and Ascent: A novel four-roller mechanism was used to raise the balloon, setting a new standard for marine spaceports and enabling year-round, global spaceflight operations.
  • Spaceship Neptune Capsule: The largest spaceflight capsule ever flown, with the largest windows, maintained cabin pressure and stability at peak altitude, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for future passengers.
  • Thermal Management: The spacecraft’s advanced thermal control system effectively managed extreme temperature variations, guaranteeing a pleasant environment inside the capsule.
  • SpaceBalloon™ Performance: The use of hydrogen lift gas with the SpaceBalloon™ demonstrated the viability of renewable lift gases for space travel.
  • Mission Control and Retrieval: Proprietary software and communication systems were validated, and the retrieval process was executed seamlessly.

  1. it-is-balloon-!

  2. It is very misleading and blatantly false advertising by the company to call this a spaceship or spaceport or space tourism or that the tourists are going to space, etc. An altitude of 100,000 ft is about 33 km, and is only one third the distance to the Karman line (100 km) which is internationally recognized as “space”, at least to get astronaut wings. What they are doing is taking people to what some in high altitude balloon societies and clubs call “Near Space”. I’m sure the experience will be amazing and i know you can see the curvature of the earth and also the black sky, because I’ve sent a few high altitute ballons with payloads (usually camers and trackers) as part of school or amateur high altitude balloon clubs. The technological challenges to send people up to that altitude is also commendable. But advertising this as going to space or calling it a spaceship launched from a spaceport is outright false and a lie.
