After years of alarming mortality rates among Florida’s manatee population, recent data suggests a glimmer of hope. According to a report by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the number of manatee deaths has decreased in 2023 compared to previous years.

However, experts warn that significant challenges, including human activities like boating, continue to pose a threat to these gentle marine mammals.

As of August 25, 2023, 431 manatees have died across Florida, a decrease from 669 in 2022 and 928 in 2021. The five-year average for manatee deaths stands at 597. “This year, far fewer deaths have been attributed to starvation,” said Martine DeWit, a research scientist with the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

The decline in starvation-related deaths is partly due to the recovery of seagrass in parts of the Indian River Lagoon, a critical habitat for migrating manatees. However, red tide blooms, first documented in November 2022, have emerged as a new threat, killing 85 manatees in southwest Florida this March alone.

Despite the overall decrease in mortality, human-related activities continue to be a significant concern. Seventy-two manatee deaths in 2023 were linked to watercraft collisions. “Watercraft collisions remain the most significant cause of death statewide over the years,” DeWit noted.

In Brevard County, which includes Titusville, 36 manatees have died this year, making it one of the counties with the highest number of manatee deaths in Florida.

While the data may indicate a slowing trend in manatee deaths, it also serves as a reminder that more needs to be done to protect these vulnerable creatures, especially from human-related activities.
