Two weeks ago, on June 6, 2025, the Department of the Air Force released its long-awaited Draft EIS for converting SLC-37—formerly home to United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV Heavy—into a Starship-Super Heavy launch site. The draft assesses up to 76 launches per year, along with the construction, fueling, testing, and transportation activities required for regular Starship operations.

The public comment period for the Draft SLC-37 EIS runs from June 13 through July 28, 2025. During this 45-day window, anyone can review the full PDF online and submit written feedback on the analysis and proposed mitigation measures.

To facilitate in-depth discussion, the Air Force will host three in-person hearings—each featuring a formal presentation at 5:30 p.m. followed by an opportunity for verbal comments—and one virtual session.

Why Your Input Matters

Both EIS processes will evaluate a broad spectrum of environmental resources: air quality, noise and vibration, biological and cultural sites, water resources, hazardous materials handling, traffic and transportation, and the socioeconomic fabric of the region. As SpaceX pushes toward a future of routine Starship flights—supporting everything from NASA’s Artemis lunar missions to national security and commercial payloads—public feedback shapes mitigation measures, alternative siting options, and even project schedules.

How to Submit Comments

You can submit comments online at the project’s comment portal or by U.S. mail to CCSFS Starship EIS, 5401 W. Kennedy Blvd #300, Tampa, FL 33609. The web form is available here. All comments—whether written or spoken during hearings—become part of the public record and must be received by July 28, 2025.

After the comment deadline, both the FAA and Air Force will review submissions, revise their drafts as warranted, and publish Final EIS documents and Records of Decision. The Air Force aims to issue its final Record of Decision in fall 2025, in other words, fairly soon. These decisions will determine not only the location and cadence of future Starship launches but also the safeguards—and costs—for surrounding communities.
