A new opportunity for local youth to develop leadership skills and maritime expertise is setting sail in North Brevard. Sea Scout Ship 5179, also known as SSS Kraken, is in the process of chartering through the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 17-09 in Titusville, offering teens and young adults hands-on experience with boating, sailing, and water safety.
The program was founded by Jeremy “Remy” Spencer, who was introduced to sailing through his father-in-law and later discovered the Sea Scouts while looking for a Boy Scouts program for his stepson. Seeing the potential of the program, Spencer decided to bring it to Titusville, eliminating the need for local youth to travel to Orlando to participate.

A Unique, Co-Ed Scouting Experience
Sea Scouts, a division of Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), focuses on maritime activities and leadership development. Unlike traditional scouting troops, Sea Scouts engage in water-based adventures such as sailing, kayaking, and boating safety training.
One of the key aspects of the program that surprises many is that Sea Scouts is fully co-ed, welcoming both young men and women ages 14-20 (or 13 if they have completed eighth grade).
“The program is designed to foster youth leadership and promote peer problem-solving,” Spencer said. “From planning sailing events to funding long-distance cruising trips, the youth are at the forefront of it all.”
Beyond hands-on boating experience, the program opens doors for future careers in maritime fields. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy reserves a number of admission spots for Sea Scouts each year, and the program is also recognized by maritime academies nationwide. Additionally, college students in the Auxiliary University Program can use their Sea Scout experience as a pathway to becoming commissioned officers in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Joining the Crew
Sea Scout Ship 5179 is open to all youth who meet the age requirements, and annual enrollment fees are $170 for new members, $145 for returning Scouts, and $105 for adult leaders. However, financial assistance is available for those who need it.
“The BSA’s position is that finances should never be a barrier to scouting,” Spencer emphasized. “There are opportunity funds, grants, and uniform closets to help those in need.”
Parents can also play a role in supporting their child’s involvement, whether by becoming an adult leader, helping with transportation, or participating in fundraising efforts.

Building Community Connections
The Sea Scouts will actively engage with the local boating community and participate in public events such as sailing and motorboat regattas. They will also train with the Coast Guard and Auxiliary for disaster response and sea safety programs.
Fundraising efforts will be led by the youth, helping finance activities and potential new watercraft acquisitions. The ship also welcomes community donations, which may be tax-deductible.
“Most Sea Scout ships’ first boats were donated by charitable citizens,” Spencer noted.

Setting Sail for the Future
As Ship 5179 nears its official charter, leaders are already planning for the year ahead. The group aims to establish a strong foundation of youth and adult members, organize long-distance sailing trips, and work toward earning recognition as a National Flagship—one of the highest honors in Sea Scouts.
“Our long-term goal is to plan a long cruise, possibly a 7-10 day trip to the Florida Keys or the Bahamas,” Spencer said. “We also want to build a strong leadership base that can continue growing the program.”
