UPDATE: Space Perspective received a 5-day eviction notice on Friday, January 17th, and must either vacate the premises by Wednesday, January 22nd or pay over $90,000 in unpaid rent to the Titusville-Cocoa Airport Authority.
Space Perspective, a once-celebrated space tourism company based at Space Coast Regional Airport, has come to a standstill amid financial turmoil, mass furloughs, and allegations of executive mismanagement.
The company, which promised luxury stratospheric balloon flights for $125,000 per ticket, is now under scrutiny as employees, creditors, and investors question its leadership and future viability.
Space Perspective garnered international attention in October 2024 when billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic announced he would co-pilot the company’s first crewed balloon flight. This partnership was widely seen as a major endorsement of the company’s vision.
Branson’s involvement coincided with a September 2024 uncrewed test flight of a prototype capsule, which was launched beneath a 550-foot hydrogen-filled balloon from the MS Voyager ship in the Gulf of Mexico.
The company celebrated the test flight’s success with a high-profile media event at Port Canaveral and claimed the mission marked a significant step toward launching commercial operations in 2026.
Space Perspective also boasted endorsements from prominent investors, including Prime Movers Lab, LightShed Partners, E2MC, Green Sands Equity, and SpaceFund. The company raised $100 million in funding, which it said would support its ambitious goal of flying up to 140 missions per year from various locations around the globe.
Despite its endorsements and public accolades, Space Perspective’s financial stability has come under severe strain. Public records obtained by Florida Today reveal the company owes $90,295 in unpaid rent for three parcels at Space Coast Regional Airport, dating from May to November 2024. A December default notice warned of potential lease termination and eviction due to a history of late and partial rent payments.
Additionally, the company faced a lawsuit in June 2023 from an engineering firm claiming $111,445 in unpaid invoices for work on a balloon manufacturing facility. While the lawsuit was dismissed in October 2024, it underscored ongoing financial challenges.
In August 2024, the Brevard County Tax Collector issued a warrant for $155,911 in unpaid tangible property taxes, later reduced to $75,253 and paid by the company in October.
Multiple visits by Florida Today to Space Perspective’s “Mission Control” facility at Space Coast Regional Airport found the building largely abandoned. Employees reported mass furloughs beginning during Thanksgiving 2024, with most of the remaining workforce furloughed just before Christmas.
A former employee, in a since-deleted Glassdoor review, stated that operations have ceased entirely. “No space capsules are being refurbished or built, no balloons are in production, and maintenance has stopped on existing structures,” the review said.
The deleted review and an email from another former employee alleged a pattern of mismanagement by Space Perspective’s founders, Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum. While praised for their innovation, the co-founders were accused of disregarding expert advice, prioritizing public relations over operations, and setting unrealistic timelines.
The review claimed the founders staged events for investors and media while leaving employees to undo “fake work” and address actual operational tasks. “Each time the executives interfered, believing they knew better than the people doing the job, it resulted in delays and increased costs,” the former employee wrote.
The company’s interim CEO, appointed by lead investor Prime Movers Lab, has also faced criticism for a lack of experience in aerospace, tourism, and manufacturing. According to employees, the company abruptly furloughed 25% of the workforce during Thanksgiving, only to impose further cuts weeks later.
Space Perspective reported over 1,800 reservations for its luxury balloon flights, which promised passengers Wi-Fi, cocktail service, and unparalleled views of Earth. However, with operations halted and no communication to ticket holders, the future of these reservations remains uncertain.
Space Perspective once aimed to create 240 high-paying jobs and invest $38 million in facilities and equipment at Space Coast Regional Airport. Despite its promising vision and high-profile endorsements, the company’s financial troubles and leadership struggles have brought it to a halt.
