The Florida Department of Health is urging residents to remain vigilant as a nationwide listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meats continues to expand, with new cases and deaths reported across the country, including in Florida.
The outbreak has hit close to home in Titusville, with both Publix locations in the city now on the FDA’s list of retail locations affected by the recall.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Wednesday that the outbreak has now affected 57 people across 18 states, with nine fatalities. This represents a significant increase from the previous report on August 8th, which recorded 43 hospitalizations and three deaths.
Florida has reported at least one death linked to the outbreak, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The CDC map also indicates that Florida has seen 13 hospitalizations.
Boar’s Head has recalled over 7 million pounds of deli meats since the outbreak began, including all products produced at its Jarratt, Virginia facility. The company is facing legal action from affected families.
The recalled products include various ready-to-eat meats and poultry products, including prepackaged deli meats and liverwurst. Consumers should look for “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.
The Florida Department of Health is reminding residents to check their refrigerators for any recalled Boar’s Head products and to dispose of them immediately.
Symptoms of listeria poisoning can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.
Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. Local residents who may have purchased Boar’s Head deli meats from either Publix location in Titusville are encouraged to check their refrigerators and return of any recalled products.
