United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced today that Basil Samir Itani, a 46-year-old pharmacist from Titusville, has pleaded guilty to distributing and dispensing controlled substances.

The plea comes months after Itani’s arrest by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), an incident we previously covered. Itani now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. A date for the sentencing has yet to be determined.

According to the plea agreement, Itani engaged in the illegal sale of controlled substances on nine separate occasions between January 5 and May 24 of this year.

A confidential source was able to purchase various controlled substances, including oxycodone, methadone, alprazolam, methylphenidate, and morphine, from Itani for cash and without a prescription. These transactions occurred after hours at Itani’s pharmacy.

Itani’s actions were deemed unauthorized and outside the scope of professional practice, as he distributed and dispensed these substances not for legitimate medical purposes but for illicit gain.

The case was thoroughly investigated by the DEA in collaboration with the Titusville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman is prosecuting the case.

This conviction serves as a stern reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal distribution of controlled substances, particularly by professionals who abuse their positions of trust.
