Each year, Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex aims to bring new and exciting experiences to guests, and this year is no different.
“Asteroid Hunters” is a brand new IMAX original documentary that premiered on Oct. 6 that included an opportunity for park attendees to speak with Phil Groves, writer and producer of this film.
Narrated by “Stars Wars” actor Daisy Ridley, this 38-minute documentary takes audiences on a journey to deep space as asteroid scientists determine the potential threat these objects could have on our planet.
Using cutting-edge technology, asteroid scientists look to space to track asteroids large and small to prevent any catastrophes from occurring.
“You can’t throw a net over a volcano or prevent a hurricane from coming,” Mr. Groves told audiences before the documentary began. “At least asteroids are a potential risk you can stop.”
“Asteroid Hunters” is a visually-stunning documentary in 3-D that will inspire a new generation of scientists to look beyond our planet.
During the documentary, a graphic shows the locations of 200 craters on the Earth’s surface from asteroids that have hit in the past. Scientists discuss how organizations are working to stop asteroids and the plans to evacuate cities in case.
Although, according to Mr. Groves, there’s a higher chance that an asteroid would hit water than land.
“Asteroid Hunters” also dives into Potentially Hazardous Asteroids and the kind of impact it would make if one were to land.
The documentary brings up different points of diversionary tactics from scientists, such as launching a nuke at an asteroid, although that is a decision global leaders would have to be involved in.
“NASA is creating a space telescope and they’re going to put it between the Earth and the sun,” Mr. Groves said. “One of the things that makes asteroids hard to find is the glare of the sun.
“I hope the subject of the film is a call to action,” Mr. Groves continued. “The United States is a global leader and is raising its funds for our defense. The whole world needs to be invested in this.”
Mr. Groves was the EVP of Worldwide Distribution for IMAX Corporation and Vice President of Film for Loews Cineplex before becoming a film producer.
According to a press release, Mr. Groves earned screenwriting credits and storyboarded a number of films including the comedy classic “Airplane!”, created on-screen graphics for television’s Wall Street Journal Consumer Newsline, and published comic books s writer and illustrator.
