Blue Origin LLC, the space venture backed by Amazon.com Founder Jeff Bezos, has experienced recent setbacks in its efforts to launch the highly anticipated New Glenn rocket. Incidents at the company’s Florida factory, including a mishap that damaged a portion of a future rocket and an explosion during stress testing, have raised concerns about the company’s ability to meet its ambitious launch schedule.

According to Bloomberg, sources familiar with the situation revealed that the upper portion of one rocket crumpled during a move to a storage hangar, partly due to worker error. Additionally, another upper rocket portion exploded during stress testing.

The damaged hardware was intended for the second and third flights of the New Glenn rocket, scheduled after the planned October debut. Blue Origin maintains that it is on track for the October launch, which is crucial for a NASA mission called Escapade.

The mission aims to send twin spacecraft to Mars to study its magnetic field, taking advantage of the optimal alignment of Earth and Mars during this period.

Despite the recent setbacks, Blue Origin emphasizes its progress, highlighting the completion of flight hardware and ongoing assembly and engine integrations. The company acknowledges the inherent difficulties in launching new rockets,even for the most successful companies.

The New Glenn rocket is pivotal to Blue Origin’s ambitions to compete with SpaceX and United Launch Alliance for lucrative US national security missions and commercial satellite launches. It is also central to clearing a backlog of commercial launches for satellite operators, including Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which aims to expand global broadband access.
