The City of Titusville issued a warning to residents Thursday regarding a phone scam where callers disguise their phone numbers to appear as official city government offices.

Scammers are using “caller ID spoofing” to make incoming calls look like they are originating from legitimate City of Titusville phone numbers. According to city officials, the goal of the scam is to trick residents into providing confidential personal or financial information.

The city stated it will never request sensitive data over an unsolicited phone call. This includes passwords, Social Security numbers, banking information, credit card numbers, or authentication codes.

“Residents should not provide personal or financial information to callers unless they are certain the call is legitimate,” the city said in a news release. Officials encouraged anyone who receives a request for confidential information from a caller claiming to represent the city to hang up immediately.

Those who receive a suspicious call are asked to document the phone number shown on the caller ID, the date and time of the call, what the caller requested, and any callback numbers provided.

Residents can verify the legitimacy of a call by hanging up and calling the specific city department directly using phone numbers listed in the official city directory.
