Brevard County’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Program is marking a major milestone with the completion of its 100th pollution reduction project.
To celebrate, the program is inviting the community to participate in the “Clams Across the Lagoon” event on Feb. 1, 2025, at Sand Point Park in Titusville.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and feature a symbolic clam release from the A. Max Brewer Bridge into the Indian River Lagoon. Residents will join hands across the bridge, reminiscent of the unity shown a decade ago when the community raised awareness of the lagoon’s critical condition.
This time, 100,000 clams—grown in partnership with the University of Florida and the Brevard Zoo—will be released to accelerate the lagoon’s restoration.
The event will also include interactive exhibits, games, and information booths hosted by city, state, nonprofit, and community partners who have contributed to the success of SOIRL projects. Food trucks will be on-site to provide refreshments, making it a family-friendly celebration of progress.
Participants can learn about the lagoon’s recovery, marked by decreased algae blooms, clearer water, and expanding seagrass beds. The SOIRL program, funded by a voter-approved half-cent sales tax since 2016, has played a key role in this progress.
Its efforts have focused on improving wastewater treatment, repairing leaking sewer lines, upgrading septic systems, treating stormwater, removing muck from the lagoon, and restoring natural habitats such as oyster beds, clams, and seagrass.
Attendees can also discover ways to get involved in future restoration efforts and help further the lagoon’s recovery. For more information about the event or the SOIRL program, contact IRLProject@BrevardFL.gov.
