Space Florida, the state’s aerospace economic development agency, has revealed plans for a major $1.8 billion investment titled Project Hinton.

The project, detailed in a recent investment assessment, outlines the development of a high-volume production facility, high bay, and launch infrastructure at the Cape Canaveral Spaceport.

While Space Florida has yet to disclose the company behind this massive investment, speculation is already growing as to which aerospace industry giant could be taking the lead.

Industry experts believe the investment may be SpaceX, with its rapid production of Starship and Falcon Heavy vehicles, SpaceX has expanded its presence at Cape Canaveral over the last decade. This project would align with SpaceX’s focus on scaling high-volume rocket production to meet growing demand for launches and deep-space missions.

The proposed project, with anticipated construction beginning in January 2025, is expected to create approximately 600 jobs with an average salary of $93,000 annually.

To bring Project Hinton to fruition, Space Florida will allocate up to $50 million in matching grant funds through the Florida Department of Transportation’s Spaceport Improvement Program. An additional $15 million will support critical infrastructure improvements, such as power upgrades and industrial wastewater treatment.

Proposed Landing Pads at LC-39A
According to publicly available records, NASA submitted a request for a wetlands determination permit on December 11, 2024, signaling potential construction of new landing pads just outside the perimeter fence at SpaceX’s Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A).

LC-39A, leased by SpaceX from NASA, is central to SpaceX’s operations for Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and future Starship missions. The new landing pads would accommodate increased launch and recovery activity, aligning with SpaceX’s push for high-frequency launches and reusable rocket infrastructure.

The timing of NASA’s permit application closely coincides with the goals of Project Hinton, which focuses on high-volume production and integration of heavy-lift hardware. If connected, these developments could further solidify SpaceX’s growing dominance on the Space Coast.
