UPDATED at 11:51am to include new information about the woman from Sanford

A tragic accident on State Road 46 near Sweetwater Court on Monday evening resulted in the death of an 82-year-old woman from Mims.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on September 23, 2024. The deceased, driving a 2008 Mazda 6, was traveling westbound on SR 46 and attempted a U-turn at Sweetwater Court, crossing into the path of an oncoming 2018 Nissan Rogue driven by a 31-year-old woman from Sanford.

The head-on collision caused fatal injuries to the Mims woman, who was pronounced dead at Parrish Medical Center.Hughes sustained serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she is currently undergoing surgery. Her husband, John Morillo, was alerted to the crash by an Apple Watch notification. The couple has two children.

FHP investigators noted that the deceased was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Nissan Rogue was properly restrained.

Trooper Koller is leading the crash investigation, with Corporal Stanley assisting as the homicide investigator. The investigation is ongoing, and further details may be released as they become available.

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and adhering to traffic laws. The FHP urges all motorists to exercise caution and remain vigilant on the roadways.

    I live here on 46. Too much speeding and too much aggression from drivers. If you follow the speed limit, people pass you and go 80. Just turning in my driveway, drivers get mad, flip the bird, drive around you if you have to wait to turn…. accident’s here are almost a daily occourance. Something should be done.
