At the recent Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Meeting held at City Hall, residents and officials gathered to hear a presentation on the expansion plans for the Titusville Playhouse.

The presentation, delivered by Steven Heron, the executive and artistic director of the Titusville Playhouse, showcased exciting developments that promise to transform the cultural landscape of the Downtown Titusville area.

Heron began the presentation by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to present the Titusville Playhouse’s vision for the future. He highlighted the significant growth the Playhouse has experienced in recent years, with a record-breaking number of attendees in their latest season. Heron emphasized the Playhouse’s role as an economic driver, attracting thousands of visitors from both within and outside the Brevard County area.

Heron stated, “Our latest season we saw over 41,000 people through our doors. This past show, ‘Beautiful’, which closed just a couple of weeks ago, we welcomed nearly 6700 people through the doors, with 65% of them coming from outside of North Brevard. And in addition to that, 34% of them were outside of Brevard County alone.”

The expansion plans, guided by industry leaders and architects from HKS Architects, aim to address the Playhouse’s space constraints and accommodate its growing audience. Matt Clear from HKS Architects presented initial design concepts, outlining the vision for the new facilities.

The proposed expansion includes a state-of-the-art theater complex with a seating capacity of 500-550, along with upgraded back-of-house facilities to support high-quality productions. The design incorporates an elevated lobby and covered drop-off area, enhancing the patron experience while providing much-needed space for production needs.

One of the key challenges addressed in the presentation was the limited space available for expansion. Clear discussed the innovative solutions proposed to overcome this challenge, including elevating the building to mitigate potential flood risks and incorporating sustainable design features such as green roofs to manage stormwater.

A highlight of the presentation was the concept of creating a vibrant performing arts corridor along Julia Street, connecting the Playhouse to other cultural amenities in the area.

The proposed corridor would feature pedestrian-friendly spaces, encouraging community engagement and fostering a sense of artistic vitality.

During the Q&A session, board members and residents expressed overwhelming support for the expansion plans. While acknowledging logistical concerns such as parking and stormwater management, attendees praised the ambitious vision presented by the Titusville Playhouse team.

In closing, Heron reiterated that the presentation was a preliminary step, and further collaboration with city officials and stakeholders would be essential in realizing the project.

The board members applauded the Titusville Playhouse team for their visionary approach and expressed excitement about the potential impact of the expansion on the local community.

It doesn’t architecturally fit with any of the structures around it. They are proposing an ultra modern looking building in the historically protected downtown area. I am not real impressed.

  2. I applaud Steven for his attention to detail that has grown the Playhouse to the need for this next step! Any production I have experienced there has been equal or surpassed professional troupes! Titusville is fortunate Steven chooses to give his talents to this community!!

  3. If he designs it to fit in with the surrounding area, I think it would be well accepted. I glad he’s working on this much needed protect.
