The test aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in disseminating emergency alerts to the public.

The test will be conducted at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET and will reach millions of mobile phones across the United States via Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), as well as radio and television through the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

A backup testing date has been set for October 11, 2023, in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The national test is designed to ensure that WEA and EAS continue to serve as effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those of national significance. All major U.S. wireless providers are participating in the test, which will be transmitted to their subscribers for 30 minutes.

However, individual mobile phones should receive the alert only once, provided they are on and within range of an active cell tower from a participating wireless provider.

Residents can expect their mobile phones to receive the national test alert, assuming their devices are on and within range of an active cell tower from a participating provider. The test is part of FEMA’s ongoing efforts to enhance the nation’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.

For those with questions or seeking more information about the national test, FEMA has provided a list of frequently asked questions on their website.
