April 18, 2023 – Brevard County Fire Rescue announced today has lifted its ban due to the recent rainfall.

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which measures the risk of wildfires, has fallen below 450, signaling a lower threat level for the area.

The KBDI scale ranges from 0, meaning the ground is completely saturated, to over 750, indicating desert-like conditions. As of April 18, Brevard County’s average KBDI stands at 368. Despite this improvement, county officials continue to monitor the situation to assess if further bans may be necessary.

While the risk of wildfires has decreased, Brevard County Fire Rescue warns that they can still occur. Residents are advised to remain cautious when burning yard waste or using fireworks, paying close attention to their surroundings.

To minimize the chance of wildfires impacting their homes, residents should create a defensible space of at least 30 feet around their property. This can be achieved by regularly mowing grass and trimming vegetation. Additionally, it is important to check weather forecasts before burning, as high winds or low humidity can increase the risk of wildfires spreading.
