A tragic incident occurred in Cocoa, where a woman has been arrested for allegedly providing her own mother with a fatal dose of the powerful synthetic opioid, fentanyl.

The victim was found dead in her home on Curtis Blvd. in Cocoa at 3 a.m. on March 19. An autopsy report later confirmed that the cause of death was a fentanyl overdose.

Brevard County investigators worked diligently, using witness statements and cell phone data, to identify 33-year-old Tiffani Hernandez as the person who had supplied the victim with $40 worth of fentanyl the day before her death.

Hernandez was aware that she was providing fentanyl to her mother, as evidenced by a text message she sent to the victim, in which she stated, “I just got it. U have to be careful…this is fentanyl so don’t need that much.”

Authorities were able to determine that the victim had no contact with anyone else between receiving the text message from Hernandez and her subsequent death. When confronted by detectives, Hernandez admitted to supplying the fentanyl that ultimately led to her mother’s death.

Hernandez was arrested and booked into the Brevard County jail on Friday on a charge of manslaughter, a second-degree felony.

She has since been released on bond.
