Much colder and drier air has overspread the Space Coast, marking the beginning of a prolonged period of unusually cold temperatures that will persist through the remainder of the week.
Local officials are urging residents to take immediate precautions as a Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory take effect tonight, Jan. 27.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne, a reinforcing surge of “dangerously cold air” is forecast to arrive this weekend, potentially dropping temperatures even further.
Freeze Warning and Advisory Areas
A Cold Weather Advisory covers the remainder of the county, including mainland Brevard and inland Indian River counties.
A Freeze Warning is in effect from 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, for Inland Brevard County. Residents should prepare for temperatures as low as 28°F in some areas. Expected conditions include:
- Low Temperatures: 29°F – 39°F
- Wind Chills: 24°F – 30°F

Protect the ‘4 P’s’
Emergency officials recommend focusing on these four areas to mitigate the risks of sub-freezing conditions:
- People: Dress in warm layers and limit time outdoors. Check on elderly neighbors and friends to ensure they have adequate heating.
- Pets: Bring all pets indoors. If it is too cold for you, it is too cold for them.
- Plants: Protect sensitive tropicals and annuals by covering them or moving them inside.
- Pipes: To prevent frozen pipes, allow faucets to drip and ensure outdoor pipes are insulated.

Space Heater Safety
With the drop in temperature, the NWS is emphasizing fire safety for those using supplemental heat. Keep space heaters on hard, level, non-flammable surfaces and at least three feet away from flammable materials like curtains or bedding. Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet—never use an extension cord—and turn them off before going to sleep.
A Freeze Watch remains in place for Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, with some interior areas potentially seeing lows reach 28°F.
