Governor Ron DeSantis announced Monday the early completion of the second NASA Causeway Bridge, a critical infrastructure project delivered six months ahead of schedule.

The new span, set to open to traffic as soon as Wednesday, March 19, marks a milestone in Florida’s efforts to bolster its aerospace corridor amid surging space industry demands.

Enhanced Infrastructure for a Booming Industry
The twin bridges, stretching 4,025 feet over the Indian River, replace outdated drawbridges with taller, wider fixed spans, eliminating traffic delays from maritime openings. Designed to accommodate oversized space payloads and vehicles, the upgrades future-proof Brevard County’s transportation network as the region cements its status as a global space hub.

“Cape Canaveral Spaceport shattered records with 93 launches and 2.7 million pounds of cargo last year. With over 150 launches anticipated this year, Florida is ensuring our infrastructure keeps pace,” said Governor DeSantis. He emphasized the state’s readiness to vie for NASA’s new headquarters, citing the project as proof of Florida’s commitment to space innovation.

Traffic Flow and Project Impact
Starting this week, westbound traffic will shift to the newly completed bridge, while the original span, finished 125 days early in 2023, will handle eastbound travel exclusively. The first bridge has already facilitated over 1,000 critical transports for Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and defense partners.

Collaboration and Cost
The $128 million initiative was spearheaded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in partnership with NASA and Space Florida. FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue highlighted the collaboration: “By aligning with industry and community needs, we’re building a foundation to support Florida’s workforce and economic growth for decades.”

Complementary Upgrades
The bridge project follows the late 2024 completion of the 2.7-mile Space Commerce Way expansion, widened to four lanes between NASA Parkway West and Kennedy Parkway. These upgrades streamline access to Kennedy Space Center, Exploration Park, and surrounding aerospace hubs, easing congestion for oversized cargo.

A Strategic Leap Forward
With infrastructure now matching its orbital ambitions, Florida solidifies its position as the nation’s gateway to space. As DeSantis noted, “These bridges aren’t just concrete and steel—they’re launchpads for the next era of American space exploration.”

The NASA Causeway Bridge project underscores Florida’s strategy to lead in the global space economy, ensuring seamless logistics for an industry poised for exponential growth.

  1. Florida is the only state I know of that major projects actually finish early.
