In a world increasingly dominated by screens, Springs to Sea Outdoor Adventure and Education, led by Rebecca Chapman, is reconnecting children and families with the wonders of the natural world.

Founded by Chapman, a certified Florida Master Naturalist, the program offers hands-on eco-education experiences designed to inspire a love for nature while building meaningful connections.

A Natural Path to Education
Chapman’s journey into eco-education began when she completed the Florida Master Naturalist program through the University of Florida in 2022. She initially collaborated with another local naturalist to host field trips, sparking her passion for outdoor learning.

When the original program director retired, Chapman eagerly took over, expanding the offerings through her eco-tour business. With permits secured from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, she now operates educational programs at the Sendler Education Outpost within the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

These include grade-specific sessions for K-5 students, a high school environmental science program, and Friday morning classes for younger children. “Fridays are a perfect fit for families with preschoolers looking for enriching activities,” Chapman explains, though her program welcomes children of all ages.

Learning Through Nature
Chapman’s philosophy is simple yet profound: “Nature itself is both the teacher and the classroom.” Each session is built around this principle, featuring movement activities such as yoga or animal mimicry, interactive lessons with hands-on activities, and a craft for children to take home.

All of the materials for the program fit into three plastic bins, with nature providing the rest. After structured activities, families are encouraged to enjoy lunch at the pavilion and explore the surrounding environment, fostering even deeper connections.Building Connections

At its core, Chapman’s program is about more than education—it’s about fostering connections. “We spend too much time disconnected,” she says. “By helping people connect with nature and each other, we can create a future where we truly thrive.”

Participants consistently share positive feedback. A high school group recently expressed their desire for more time to explore, highlighting the program’s lasting impression.

Family-Centered and Flexible
The program is designed for children aged 3-5 but is open to all ages, with adult guardians required to attend. Chapman encourages family participation, involving parents and older siblings in activities to create a shared experience.

While the current program mirrors the academic year, Chapman is open to continuing sessions into the summer if there’s interest, adapting to the community’s needs. “Everything is mobile, so we can set up an outdoor classroom anywhere,” she notes.

A Labor of Love
When asked what motivates her, Chapman’s passion is clear: “I get to play with kids outside in nature. What else is there?”

Through her work, she creates core memories for children and their families while fostering a deep appreciation for the environment.

Springs to Sea Outdoor Adventure and Education is more than an educational program—it’s a movement to reconnect families with the natural world.

Thanks to Rebecca’s dedication, children and their parents are discovering the joy and wonder of learning in nature, one adventure at a time.
