The Titusville Post Office is expected to remain closed for approximately three weeks following a mercury spill discovered on May 28th, 2024, City Council Member Sarah Stoeckel says

Staff at the post office have been in communication with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regarding the HAZMAT incident.

The investigation points to a delivery truck as the source of the contamination, which registered higher-than-normal levels of mercury.

The extent of the contamination and the cause of the spill are still under investigation. FDEP has shut down all post office operations, and it is not clear when mail delivery service will be restored.

There have been no reports of serious injuries or illness related to the spill. However, officials are advising the public to avoid the area.

  1. Three WEEKS. Not three days. Clearly it is way more serious than they are letting on.

With a delivery truck showing high reading, That likely means some employees may be under medical observation to make sure thet do not have mercury poisioning

  2. Yesterday, May 29, we received one letter and one package delivered by USPS.

When I was a kid we all played with mercury! Coated dimes and quarters with it, made them really shiny!.

  4. Three weeks…….and no clear guidane on options to get mail deliverred

I understand things happen but it always seems to be a reason the USPS underdelivers and is exactly why citizens are increasingly going to any other delivery method

  5. Will they be able to deliver the packages that we paid shipping for? I had 2 and my mom had 1 she’s waiting on. They were all out for delivery last Tuesday.. None containing mercury of course. Will we somehow be reimbursed for these or even able to receive them if they were on that delivery truck??

  6. What about the PO Boxes located at this post office. How are we supposed to receive our PO Box mail?

  7. Ok, as a HAZMAT technician and a nationally certified HAZMAT Instructor, this doesn’t seem even close to right. There are multiple companies (AOTC, EPI, Clean Harbors, etc) that could send in a team and have it wiped down for cleanup in a day, maybe 2 at max. The “official” estimate is that it was 2-3 ounces that were released….that’s it. Any measurable amount is “higher than normal” so the platitudes and double speak abut the seriousness of this vs the timeline for cleanup vs how much they stated was released doesn’t add up.

    1. Now Christmas post office is closed.

  8. So glad I switched to getting all my bills sent electronically so now, with the exception of my water bill and a couple stray notices, all I get is junk mail. Hope they don’t hold all that junk mail and deliver it when the service re-starts.

  9. Read yesterday that Christmas post office is now closed.
