A 20-year-old inmate who escaped from a work camp in Cocoa on Friday was apprehended in Volusia County within a week, according to local deputies.

Nathan Barker was captured with the help of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in the New Smyrna Beach area, following a week-long manhunt.

On Thursday morning, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook to share an image of Barker, shirtless and in handcuffs, with a civil “Here you go,” addressed to Brevard investigators. The investigators had previously announced their search for Barker on Saturday.

After escaping from the work camp on Camp Road, Barker was believed to have removed the GPS from his ankle monitor and headed to Volusia County, according to Brevard deputies.

Just before 1 a.m., Barker was booked into jail on an out-of-county warrant for escape, tampering with an electronic monitoring device, and battery. He also faces a charge for violating parole.

Brevard deputies expressed their gratitude for the swift assistance from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in apprehending Barker, highlighting the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation.
