A 95-year-old Titusville man died from injuries sustained after his vehicle breached a lowered railroad gate and was struck by an oncoming train earlier last week, according to the Titusville Police Department.
The incident occurred when James Porter Dickenson, of Spring Creek Lane, was driving a 2019 Hyundai eastbound on Knox McRae Drive approaching the intersection of Hopkins Avenue.

Authorities stated that Dickenson’s vehicle entered the railroad crossing despite activated safety signals, including flashing red lights and lowered gates, as a southbound Florida East Coast Train approached. The train collided with the driver’s side of the Hyundai, causing the car to spin violently.
Dickenson was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries following the crash.
In a press release, police emphasized that the gates and warning signals were operational at the time of the collision. The Titusville Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances leading to the crash, including potential factors such as driver error or medical conditions.
“This remains an active investigation, and we urge anyone with information to contact our office,” a department spokesperson said.
The fatal collision underscores the critical importance of adhering to railroad crossing signals. According to federal data, approximately 2,100 collisions occur annually at U.S. railroad crossings, with improper disregard of warnings cited as a leading cause.
No additional injuries were reported, and the Florida East Coast Train crew is cooperating with authorities. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
