A 19-year-old Dunnellon man died Sunday morning after losing control of his motorcycle and striking a utility pole on U.S. Highway 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred at 3:52 a.m. near the intersection of Puma Valley Way.

Troopers said the man was operating a Suzuki RX1000 southbound in the inside lane of U.S. Highway 1. The rider was traveling above the posted speed limit and failed to negotiate a left-hand curve.

The motorcycle ran off the roadway to the right and collided with a utility pole.

First responders transported the rider to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

FHP officials confirmed the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. His next of kin has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation by Trooper Wiggins and Corporal Sousa.
