Davenport Traffic Responder killed in I-95 crash involving semi-truck

A 34-year-old Davenport man died Monday morning after a semi-truck struck his parked maintenance vehicle on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred at 9:04 a.m. near mile marker 228. Troopers said the man was driving a 2024 GMC Sierra truck, which was parked in the outside lane with its arrow board and emergency lights activated to warn drivers of a vehicle fire ahead. A 2007 semi-truck traveling north in the outside lane failed to slow or move over for the parked truck, according to the FHP report. The front of the semi-truck struck the rear of the maintenance vehicle. The impact caused both vehicles to collide with the guardrail on the outside shoulder. Troopers said the driver of the maintenance truck was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. A passenger in the maintenance truck, a 42-year-old man from Saint Cloud, suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital. The driver of the semi-truck, a 63-year-old Orlando man, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. The crash remains under investigation by FHP. FDOT and FHP would like to remind all motorists to follow Florida’s Move Over law. Drivers are required to move over a lane, when it is safe to do so, for stopped law enforcement, emergency, sanitation, utility service, tow or maintenance vehicles displaying warning lights, as well as disabled vehicles. If you cannot move over, or if you are traveling on a two-lane road, slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
