Ronald Kieta, 53, of Titusville, was arrested Friday, Nov. 14, and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injuries. He is being held at the Brevard County Jail on a no bond status.

Technology Narrows Search Immediately
The crash took place on Saturday, Nov. 8, at approximately 2:04 a.m., near Cheney Highway and Foley Road. A silver Chevrolet Camaro struck a bicyclist from behind, and the driver, Kieta, fled the scene shortly after initially stopping. The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The key to the quick identification of the suspect’s vehicle was the Flock Safety System, a network of automated license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras utilized by the Titusville Police Department. This technology allowed investigators to rapidly identify the vehicle of interest—the silver Camaro—based on the time and location of the incident.

Data and Community Collaboration
Using the data gathered by the Flock license plate readers, Criminal Investigations Detectives were able to locate the vehicle and the driver. Further investigation, which included interviews and the collection of physical evidence, led to Kieta’s arrest.

Detective Sergeant Bryan Nelson highlighted the effectiveness of the integrated approach in solving the case.

“Using data from our Flock Safety Systems which includes license plate readers and citizens who stepped up to share information, detectives were able to quickly identify and arrest the hit-and-run suspect,” said Detective Sergeant Nelson. “This incident highlights the power of teamwork between the community and today’s technology in keeping Titusville safe.”
