Petition to rename Andrew Jackson Middle School nearing end, up to School Board

A petition that was started by Marcus Hoochman, and Oak Park elementary teacher and Titusville resident to rename Andrew Jackson Middle School might appear before the Brevard School Board

Hochman said Andrew Jackson is a poor choice for a school name because of his ownership of slaves and connection to the forced removal of native Americans from there and South Carolina

On the petition to rename the school, only 11 out of the 57 responses favored the name change, some calling the name change “cancel culture” snd “erasing history”

The petition was filed before the school board passed a new policy and may restricting name change petitions.

Previous policy allowed anyone to petition to name a school, triggering a long process to gather community feedback and requiring three public meetings.

School board member Katye Campbell said the Andrew Jackson middle school petition appears to have attracted significantly less response from a 2020 push to rename Melbourne high school for prominent Hispanic astronaut Joseph Akaba.

Supporters of Melbourne High School petition withdrew it in February this year after school board member Matt Susson said a cable was not interested in having the school renamed after him

The petition to rename Andrew Jackson middle school did not specify what the new name would be but some people have suggested the school the Be named after Harry T & Harriette V. Moore, the two civil rights leaders and educators who were assassinated in 1951 in Mims

A student at Andrew Jackson middle school said, “as a student at Jackson, the money that could be used for my education and my safety should be used for such, and not for something that someone outside of the school believes should be changed. I do not want the name of Jackson changed”

Brevard Public School staff will make a recommendation for or against changing the school name. For the change to take place, the name retirement petition would require approval from the school board. The next school board meeting will be held September 8
